Practicing My Stitches - ABC Crewelwork Sampler

I wanted to wait until I finished a few letters before I shared this project on the blog. After your recommendations, I decided to try the Daisychain ABC's Crewelwork Pattern by Alicia Paulson and practice my new love for embroidery. I was a little nervous about tackling such an intimidating embroidery project as a beginner to the craft. I am so glad I started it! I've never worked with crewel wool before this project either but I really like the texture. This sampler has been such a fun project to work on over the past few weeks. Each letter is unique and challenging in different ways which makes working on it even more interesting! I think the "C" is definitely my favorite so far. This project is also a wonderful reminder of how much I love making time to craft and create for myself. I love making things for others, but there is always an added pressure to make it perfect when it is a gift. I love being able to just relax, create something because I love the process and not worry about the end result.
I have 15 letters to go! My goal is to finish it before the end of August. I think I can make it!

I have to say it. This project is pretty "crewel". Haha. Pun. ;)

NYC is wonderful! I still have a little time left in the city before I return home. Time to go out and enjoy it!

  1. How pretty! What a fun way to try out embroidery. It looks like there are a lot of different techniques to learn in that pattern, which keeps it interesting. I've been meaning embroidery a try myself. This pattern just might make me take the plunge! :)

  2. Oh! I loved this project too! It was my first crewel work and I found the instructions made it totally doable. I'm still waiting to frame mine, along with the winter woods sampler, also from Alicia. So great!
I'm glad you're having a good summer. I remember the summer after I graduated (whoa, back in 2001) and it was a weird time!!

  3. I love this! I have seen this sampler floating around the internet for years but I didn't realize it was a pattern! It's definately going on my 'to make' list!

  4. Oh yay you've started this! I've been working on it since the beginning of the year or so but I'm really slow so I've only got the first row of letters done. It's probably a few-years-long project for me ;) This was when I first started (it's my first crewel also!). And I'm sure you've seen my (very slow) progress on IG!
    Have a lovely trip Meredith!

  18. It looks gorgeous! I've been eyeing the pattern but have been putting it off because I've never worked with crewel wool before. But I love the way it looks and I recently snatched some up at the thrift store, so I might have to give it a go. :)

  25. Meredith you are such an inspiration. I've dreaded the thought of learning a new craft until I saw you paper embroidery.

I love your letters here. It is beautiful! What books work well for beginners?

  27. I just started this sampler! I've been inspired by you this fall to learn how to embroider and am making this as my first big project for my soon-to-be-born niece! I've done two letters so far and am having a blast, though I know it's going to be a bit of a slog at times. Thanks again for all the great inspiration, Meredith!
