Meet the newest member of the Pyrex club! I feel so official. Officially what, I'm not sure, but it's official. Haha. I've tried thrifting in the past because...you all make it look so cool! I get a little envious when I see so many amazing pictures of different bloggers' daily vintage finds. It always makes me think, "Hey! I want a pile of awesome/inexpensive plates or dresses too!" So I set out on a vintage-seeking adventure only to discover that, in fact, I live in Dallas. I wasn't aware that a big city like Dallas could be so deprived of thrifty goodness, but unfortunately that is the state of things. I visit Goodwill and Helping Hands every now and then only to find rusty pans, creepy glass figurines, and "#1 Dad" mugs. I was prepared to accept my fate of never being a cool, vintage kid until I stumbled upon this site, Pyrex Love. I'd seen Pyrex before but, for some reason, one look at the colorful pattterns and I knew I couldn't give up just yet. I spent hours looking at all of the different plates, refrigerator sets, casserole dishes, cups, mugs, and mixing bowls until I literally had to step away from the computer. I was already addicted before I even found my first piece!
On Saturday I decided to get back up on the thrifting horse and search for Pyrex and Pyrex alone. No distractions. I went to four different thrift stores all over town until finally, at the last Helping Hands, I found it. I turned a corner and there it was! A stack of white, milk glass cups and plates all taped together with a glorious "$4" stamp on top! Hooray! I also found this beautiful blue refrigerator dish to round out my first thrift store success.

I love collecting old pyrex and have a mini collection started from thrifting, gifts and plain ol' inheritance.

ReplyDeleteI know how you feel. I just started enthusiastically vintage thrifting as well. Now, it's like my every-other-weekend thing! I went through a life transition a couple years ago that had my kids and I getting rid of a lot of things, and now we're about ready to start over, and I'm excited at the potential of really being able to fill our new home with a collection of really cool, special, pretty, vintage, "us" things, and one thing I'm definitely on the lookout for is some gorgeous Pyrex dishes. So your post got me pretty psyched. Anyway, on a side note, I commented out loud to my 4 year-old son who saw your post, too, "We're going to stock up on Pyrex dishes." To which he replied, "Or strawberries!" So he likes your pictures, too.

I began collecting pyrex this past year and I feel your pain. It is hard. BUT...that's what makes a good find so special. I love that blue dish so much!
ReplyDeleteI actually found a mug set that was the same pattern that my late grandmother had. I recognized it as soon as i saw it, so when i found another set, I purchased it for my mom. It's become a family tradition now. :) Pyrex is special like that.

I love pyrex! I have a little collection of my own and I just adore all their patterns + colors!! Esp. their daisy printed bowls!! *swoon* Anything with daisies on it is okay in my book! :)

DeleteI love going thrifting, pyrex, and vintage plates, but I live in a small town with two options. :/ Last week though, I found a small, but nice dinnerware set. I still have to look hard for pyrex. They are going for like 50$ for 3 mixing bowls :(

ReplyDeleteMy cousin collected pyrex for ages and even brought it home from holidays in the USA (Sorry, I think she bought a LOT!) she prefers the pyrex with pictures like casserole dishes with vegetables on it outside etc.
I relate to the rubbish finds thing, I hardly ever see anything I really like in charity shops.
Inherited some Pyrex from my grandma and am just starting to collect more. One thing I noticed is a ridiculous variance in pricing when shopping at antique malls. The same object in the same color and comparable condition will have very different pricing between booths/sellers. Yard sales have been my best bet so far, aside from inheriting. Good luck! DeleteYou are so lucky!! I've always dreamed of having some Pyrex to call my own but I lack A LOT of luck in finding the treasures in any thrift shop of any kind. I think I may be the last person to not have a piece of Pyrex in their possession now!

ReplyDeleteThrifting can be disappointing at times because you don't find anything, but to me half the joy is just looking at everything. I love being in a store where everything has a history, a story to tell. Around where I live, anything second hand is labelled "antique" and sold for big bucks, so I've become accustomed to just looking, and making myself a little list of ideal treasures to hunt for when I'm around the thrifty places again! It's good fun, and best with a buddy!

Welcome to the club! I love pyrex, and have been collecting since my first college apartment. I'm a BIT jealous of your first find - it's hard to find the lids with those fridgies in good condition!
ReplyDeleteI love Pyrex, but it's so hard to find where I live (and if they do have it, it's ridiculously expensive, even the patterns that aren't rare). I have two mixing bowls that my mom gave me that she's had for years. I always keep an eye out for things for my hope chest, but like I said, they're hard to find.
ReplyDeleteI've ended up collecting lots of little cups and things, that aren't any famous brand but that I just like. :) Like some of the little dripped glaze mugs from the 60s and 70s made in Japan- I have a couple of sets of those. I also love vintage Corelle dishes, especially the Crazy Daisy pattern, which my grandma has a set of.

I love finding unique things: I do go thrifting quite often. Unfortunately, however, many places around here have caught on that vintage is quite popular- and they mark up good pieces accordingly. It sucks. This $4 pan would be at least $10! Ridiculous.

ReplyDeleteI've collected Pyrex for over a year now, and I have quite the collection. I love seeing all the patterns + collars and some day I want some of the friendship pattern pieces, some pink pieces an some black pieces. Those are my dreams! <3

ReplyDeleteI spent most of my twenties looking for the primary + green set of nesting bowls. I finally got them from an exboyfriend's mom...because get this she had...4 more of that exact set. And like 30 other sets of JUST nesting bowls in a closet. I was in pyrex heaven. Secretly I wanted to marry the ex...just so maybe I could be left the amazing pyrecx in her will. Alright not seriously, but all that pyrex in all those bright lovely pristine condition colors made me drool!
