Tea & Knitting - How To Make an Earl Grey "London Fog"

I think we can all agree that tea and knitting are the perfect pair, yes? When I'm feeling down I always turn to a cup of tea and a knitting project to lift my spirits. The combination never fails to bring me out of a ho-hum day. My favorite tea drink is definitely the "London Fog". When I first tried one at Starbucks I was hooked by the perfect combination of foamy milk with a hint of vanilla. I have to admit, whenever I try to order one from my local Starbucks I feel a little weird saying "London Fog". Haha. It's like I accidentally predicted the weather in London instead of giving my drink order. When I explain the drink they usually say, "Oh! You mean a tea latte." and whip it up for me in a few minutes. So last year I got this amazing milk frothing machine so I could make my own at home just how I like it. Bonus: my face no longer turns red after an uncomfortable Starbucks order. ;)

London Fog

- 1 earl grey tea bag
- Steamed milk
- A splash of vanilla syrup (honey is good too!)

Brew the tea first and pour it into your mug, leaving room for the steamed milk. Add a splash of vanilla and then top with the steamed milk. Sip, knit, and enjoy. :)

This drink was the perfect motivation for me to cast on the second sleeve of my sweater project! I'm making progress already. Thank you again for the encouragement to finally finish it!

Have you ever had a London Fog? What is your favorite kind of tea?

  1. I've never heard of a London Fog, I've never seen it in Starbucks. So intrigued now! x

  2. It sounds delicious, looks adorable, and suddenly I am in the market for a milk frothing machine!

  3. Oh that sounds delicious! Ever since I made the Earl Grey chocolate cake you blogged about, I have been stuck on Earl Grey tea. I adore it! I also love to make a pitcher of iced sweet Earl Grey tea ... it makes me feel so fancy. Haha!

  4. I feel like I HAVE heard of it... but where? The Starbucks menu (and the baristas!) change so frequently, so maybe it's something from awhile back, like when chanticos were still being made at Starbucks. Remember those? Divine...

  5. That looks delicious - I have to try that one!

  6. I used to drink Earl Grey, but now I've discovered Lady Grey - its slightly less perfumed and really delish - have you tried it? And my current faves are fennel, and (to eat with cake) lavender and camomile - mmmm!

  7. I loooove a good London Fog. I was having a bad day out in Arizona and the bartender at a restaurant where I worked made one for me and told me that would help me relax and cheer up. And boy did it ever. So delicious.

  8. Tea! How I wish I loved you. I have tried oh so many types (black, green, herbal, roobios etc) and nothing works for me. I have total tea envy when I craft or catch up with friends. I instead sit with my glass of water and gaze forlornly at everyone... I'll give this a try and see how it goes... It looks so good!

  10. Oh, Meredith!
London Fogs are ALSO my favourite, and the starbucks in town can't make one worth drinking!! There's a small coffee chain called Balzacs that does an excellent one (and also a variation with french breakfast called a Parisian Mist), but at $5 a pop I rarely indulge.
Okay, point is: I've been wanting to make my own at home, but nobody seems to sell milk steamers without an attached $150 coffee maker, which I have no use for.

What brand is your milk steamer/frother? And please tell me you got it online, haha!

    Thanks!

    1. This frother is a CBTL Milk Frother and I bought mine from Bed Bath & Beyond: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=18742179

They also have it on Amazon and Target I think! Hopefully this helps! :)

    2. Thanks Meredith!
It may take a little extra hunting to find it in Canada, unless once Target opens they carry it! And I'm just barely over the american border, too. If only I had a car and could target shop all the time! Woe is me :P

  12. Funny, we called these a Duke of Earl when I worked at a coffee shop! And I'd say coffee goes much better with knitting, but I'm no tea lover :)

  17. As much as I love the idea of a nice cup of tea, I just have never developed a liking for it! And I know it's good for you, so I have really tried to like it. That said, this sounds pretty good!

  18. I am happy you posted this! I have only ever had London Fogs at Second Cup and also at an awesome little coffee shop called Block 1912 Cafe here in Edmonton. I find them to be a bit sweet, but love it anyways! It's more of a treat drink for me.

  19. I don't love Earl Grey, so this isn't the drink for me, but I love tea lattes in general. IF you ever go to Seattle, try a tea latte at Remedy Teas. AMAZING!!!! My favorites are the Black Tea Mocha (wonderful, since I don't like coffee but I love chocolate!) and the Rooibos Caramel. And I don't even live in Seattle -- I live in San Francisco. So my visits to Remedy are few and VERY far between.

  21. I feel proud to say that when I worked at Starbucks I definitely knew what a London Fog was when people ordered it. I guess it's not a normal thing (can I feel a bit elitist now? haha), but it is d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s! I have to get a milk frothing machine. I had no idea they existed! Also, those are the tiniest knitting needles I have ever seen! I am working on some crochet projects, and I'm like, "Give me the biggest needle and yarn to work with please!" lol good luck on finishing your project...you can do it!

  22. Love this post, I ordered a London Fog at Starbucks years ago and it was pretty good. I'll definitely have to try and make this at home now. The last few times I've had tea was herbal vanilla chamomile I believe. Love that vanilla :)

  23. I'd love to try this! I'm always too embarrassed to order things not on the menu at Starbucks, but this sounds really good. Perfect for knitting, reading, or embroidery on a wintry day.

  24. Thanks for the share! I am definitely going to have to keep my eye out for a milk frothing machine. Vanilla anything is a personal fave of mine. Personally, I may be more of a crocheter, but tea is always it's companion. :)

  25. I love hot beverages. I think that since my trip to China, I cannot live without them! I really really miss the green tea latte so I think that I should try to make it myself.
I also love to experience new flavors each season. For fall, my favourite is the pumpkin spice latte. So you can be sure to see me with a cup at least five three times a week!

  26. This sounds amazing! Why have I never tried this drink before?!

Guess I will have to put a milk frother on my Christmas list because I anticipate a lot of warm drinks + knitting this winter.

  27. I agree completely; tea and knitting is the best combination always. I have never tried a London Fog, but I sure will now, it looks very intriguing. I think my favourite tea is simply black ceylon tea with a little milk, and if I'm feeling adventurous, I love one by Clipper called Orange and Coconut. Highly recommend it!

  28. Meredith, how do you steam your milk at home? I love this and want to make one!

  29. I forgot about London Fog!! I had one a long time ago and loved it but haven't had it for awhile because I've been off dairy. My favorite tea is definitely Earl Grey. YUM!

Can't wait to see your finished sweater! It's so cute.
