Pentax Film Photos from Bishop Arts District

I brought out my Pentax K1000 this weekend for a few hours spent wandering around the Bishop Arts District. Even though it was surprisingly cold, the sun was shining and it was the perfect day to look through my camera lens and capture things I usually overlook. When I decide to shoot with film, I worry about losing my digital safety net and assume all of the photos will come out blurry and imperfect. However, I love taking my time with film, focusing the lens, framing the shot, and crossing my fingers that the picture I take accurately reflects the subject in front of me. There is no digital screen to view the images and no option to go back and fix any mistakes. That's why a few successful shots from a roll of film are far more rewarding than the 158 digital photos I usually upload to my computer.

I wish I could visit this area of town more often. I had a great brunch at Oddfellows, explored a pretty flower shop, and found two amazing bikes parked outside of the shops. How cool is that two-seater bike? It looks like it would be pretty tricky to ride.

I love the cheerful colors in this batch of photos. Just a few happy memories from a weekend of trying new things and experimenting with film.

Do you have a film camera? Why do you like shooting with film?

  1. LOVE these photos! You're right about the cheerful colors, they are just fabulous. :)

It has been years since I've shot anything with film.. I love it more than digital, especially when I had access to processing my own rolls, but I could never give up the instantaneousness of my DSLR! I can't imagine not knowing if I should reshoot something until days after the fact, especially when it comes to my Etsy shop. :/

  2. Such lovely pictures!
I too am a bit nervous now taking pictures with film,it's so much easier to correct my mistakes with digital and to improve without waiting ages to see what I did wrong.
That said I have a roll in my film camera at the moment that needs finishing off, maybe I'll get it used up and processed this weekend, I'd like to see what's on it!

  4. Ooooh...gorgeous!! So sunny & lovely, all of your shots! I just got my Aunt's old Pentax K1000 at Christmas and I can't wait to try it out! I learned how to shoot last year on a Canon AE-1 and it's heaven - so addicting, film! :)

  6. It looks so lovely. I've lived in the Dallas area for 15 years now and have yet to make it over to the Bishops Art District. I need to just GO. Not sure why I haven't.

  7. These pictures are wonderful and so bright! I actually just scored my first film camera- A Canon Rebel EOS with two lenses and a bunch of film for only $20! I'm super excited/nervous to try it out, especially while on my upcoming road trip!

  10. Oh my, I love all of these so much. You know, I have a beautiful Canon Elan IIE that I haven't used in a million years. I should really pop a battery in and go play with it. I do miss film, but it is so expensive to develop, I freak out about being wasteful with frames. You know what, whatever, I'm just going to do it. I miss that camera, it takes such gorgeous pictures.

  11. I have a Pentax K1000 too - it's secondhand and I got it for my 18th birthday. I love it but I'm ashamed to say that I don; shoot with it as often as I'd like. It is great to shoot with film though (I Have a Diana Dreamer like you) and I relish the time between shooting and waiting for the films to be developed as you never know what you're going to end up with.

  12. So weird - we were talking about taking pictures on film vs digital on my car share to work this morning. Much as I like my digital camera, I do kind of miss film: being choosy with your photos, taking lots of care and then the wait and see while they get developed. I hardly ever print my digital ones, just got thousands of images on my laptop... with film you'd make an album, so nice to flick through them.
Enough reminiscing!! Great pictures, love the shot of the tandem, and the flowers :)

  13. I have but can't remember the last time I used it! Digital is just so much less fuss and I'm too impatient to wait for film processing nowadays.

    Lovely photos!

  16. Great photos. I love the colours that have come through. I picked up an old canon a few months ago and have been having fun with it. I still love digital but feel like the film photos are more real because even though I could I won't do any editing on them. I love how the film comes out is also a surprise - did you catch that moment or the eye blink after? etc. Look forward to seeing more.

  19. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE shoting with film vs digital cameras, unfortunately I just dint have the time anymore to go out and about with my camera. With the little man, I need everything now. Which is a shame as I really enjoy the process and anticipation film gives you!

Really beautiful photos, they really make me think about spring being just around the corner.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  20. Your photos turned out so beautiful, you have a great eye for capturing lovely moments :) I use an Instax instant film camera which is very fun. I'm interested to get into film that would have to take time to develop :) The wait would be so exciting, and then there is the wonderful surprises that appear :)

  21. these are gorgeous - love the bunting photo :)

I don't shoot film very often, but when I do, I must admit I find myself looking at the back of the camera after I take a photo, like there might be a preview there, lol

  22. These are so beautiful!!! I know this will sound random, but if you described your style in one word, being as specific as you can, what would it be? Thanks.

  23. I started shooting with film again recently. Brought my first film to be developed, I am looking forward to see the result. Like you I miss the digital safety net. On the other hand I love using a slr again. My digital camera is a point and shoot.
    Have a nice weekend!

  24. My grandparents used to ride a tandem all over places in England on camping trips back in the 1930s - we have some great photographs of them :) (Granny is still going strong at nearly 97!) After my mom came along in the war, they even had a sidecar for the tandem...

  25. Gorgeous photographs. I'm also a Pentax K1000 fan, wouldn't part with mine, produces the most beautiful images and has that extra something that you just don't get with digital.

The Pentax K1000 is a good camera - we had to use that in university.
